Diego Martin Antonio Vega de Palma was born in Palma Spain on the island of Majorca to a successful trader. Often, as a devout Catholic, Diego's father would host visiting priests, monsigneurs, even cardinals. Though they rarely spoke openly about the Inquisition, Diego would often eavesdrop on his father's study late at night when these men of the cloth would speak more candidly. Diego learned of the atrocities commited by the Catholic Church and quickly lost faith. When his father learned of this he disowned his son at the young age of 10 years old and banned Diego from his estates.

Forced to make his own way in the world Diego traveled as a cabin boy on various merchant vessels for four years. In the year 1512 at the age of 14 he joined a traveling troupe of performers as a stage hand. He traveled throughout Europe learning the ways of the stage, costuming, set dressing, and performing. After a year or so of this he met a young man by the name of Raphael ben Gideon. Raphael was the son of Gideon ben Levi a noble that was expelled form spain in 1492. Raphael had been traveling the world for some time learning the ways of the sword and trying to find his place in the world.

Diego and Raphael spent a few years traveling through Europe, Raphael trained Diego a bit in the art of rapier combat, and they both learned quite a bit about local pastimes through Europe. They paid particular attention to the games of skill and chance available to the public; chess, backgammon, go, and especially cards.

In 1516 they returned to the estates of Raphael's aunt, the Duchess Natalya de Foix. Feeling that they should settle down and make a name for themselves, Diego and Raphael started investigating potential uses for their talents. Around this same time they met a young lady named Elisheva bat Yisrael. Elisheva spent the last few years traveling through Europe, attempting to honor her mother's dying wish.

The trio of them started traveling together trying to decide what they are going to do with their lives. They came up with a plan of building an inn in which they could experience the things they love, entertaining and games. With the guidance of the Goode Ship White Star they chose to build in the town of Cadiz, Spain. But there is a secret in store at the Inn of the Crimson Spade...
